I am no expert so here is some information that may or may not be useful in finding a solution.
The onboard sound card is the infamous ac97 (realtek high definition audio driver) This is really frustrating and I am about to toss the whole computer off a bridge so any insight would be helpful. I am considering purchasing another sound card but I don't have any available pci slots. but still no sound from the rear outputs. I have uninstalled/reinstalled drivers, updated drivers, updating chipset driver, multiple reformats, checked bios settings etc. I have been having this problem for three weeks and I have been searching for a solution to this problem on this forum and many others and I still have not found a solution that works for my particular situation. The front headphone jack works with both my stereo speakers and with the front speakers of my 5.1 surround. After the recovery was complete I discovered that I had no sound, not even system sounds, from the rear audio outputs.
About three weeks ago I performed a full system recovery.
